Talk About Value, Not Testing

Rob Lambert was obsessed with testing. Frameworks, tools, techniques, models — he could debate them endlessly. And yet, projects still failed, releases were late, and testing was seen as slow, boring, and ineffective. Everything changed when Rob realized a simple truth: Testing is effective when it is connected to value. This talk tells the personal story of how that insight transformed not just how Rob and his team tested software, but how their entire organization worked — and how Rob's own career accelerated once he stopped arguing about methods and started focusing on impact. By learning to see work through the lens of idea to value, they transformed a company stuck in 14-month release cycles into one delivering weekly customer value. Testing shifted from an activity into a strategic engine for learning, quality, and speed — moving from risk-based checking to value-based decision-making. Along the way, Rob learned that everything between idea and customer value is cost — including wasted meetings, delayed decisions, and beautifully executed work that solves the wrong problem. This is not a talk about testing techniques. It is a human story about how connecting testing to value transforms organizations — and how it can transform your influence and career in the messy middle of delivery.

Rob Lambert
Cultivated Management

Rob Lambert didn’t set out to be a business coach and consultant. He began as a journalist and publisher, chasing stories about people and ideas, and trained as a media communication scientist — learning how to cut through complexity and explain things in ways people understand. That curiosity led him into technology, where he spent two decades building products, leading teams, and experiencing the full journey from start-up to scale-up to sale. Along the way, Rob discovered what truly drives organisational success: not just talent, but clarity, creativity, communication, and continuous learning. He has held senior leadership roles including VP of Software, VP of HR and Head of Agility — experiences that now shape his work with leaders and teams. Through Cultivated Management, his books, workshops, and keynotes, Rob helps organisations align around value and build cultures where people can thrive. Rob lives in Winchester, England with his wife and three sons.
