Testing Machine Learning Functionality: The Need for a New Way of Thinking

When testing functionality based on machine learning or trained functionality, the focus of your testing changes. The code itself stops being interesting to some degree, and instead the focus needs to be elsewhere. Based on personal experience and research projects, this session will highlight the importance of testing your data, why independent testing is vital, and how some "old school" tools can help when thinking & planning test activities. This session will also demonstrate trained functionality intended for autonomous driving, and will touch more general problems faced when testing machine learning functionality. Key takeaways include: why we need to think slightly different when testing ML, the importance of knowing your test data, and how we can reuse the concept of test levels to showcase our testing activities.

Infotiv

With over two decades of working in the software testing industry Martin has experience from almost all aspects of testing. Through the years Martin has working several different industries including telecom, defense and automotive. The last couple of years he has divided his time between helping large organisation with test challenges and teaching test methodologies at a technical college. The interest for Machine Learning and testing of such functionality has evolved through a series of government and EU funded research projects.
